Ordinary Time
I am writing this at the start of February. Christmas and New Year are a distant memory, and all the excitement of it has pretty much gone. We’re right in the pace of life where hours and days and weeks merge together and it can become a bit dull. A bit the same. A bit ordinary. The church even calls this period of the year “Ordinary Time” – and it can feel a bit like that sometimes, can’t it? The Bible says two things that I think can be helpful on days like that. First, in the Old Testament, it says “this is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it”. Secondly, in the New Testament, it says “we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do”. I think that means two things. First, every day has a reason in it to be glad and find joy! Second, every day God has good things for us to do. I think its often really helpful to remember that even if days are dull, or hard, or exciting, or tame, we can do at least two things. Be glad and do good.
